Migoti Washed
A classic Burundi cup with crisp fruit acidity that builds towards a warmed spice finish.
The Red Bourbons we typically source have bright, juicy characteristics, but there’s something distinctive about those grown in Burundi. They often show a warm, spiced quality that we also sometimes see in neighbouring DRC. This character is likely influenced by a combination of high-altitude growing conditions, mineral-rich volcanic soils, and the region’s consistent rainfall patterns.
Toward the end of 2024, an international buyer reportedly offered to purchase Burundi’s entire coffee production at a high price. Unsurprisingly, the government accepted, but when the buyer later withdrew, it raised concerns that the country’s coffee had been undervalued, leading to a pause in all coffee exports while the situation was reviewed. Exports have now resumed, we hope it stays that way since we’ve been loving recent lots from Burundi.
