The Kariaini Coffee Factory was established in 1954, during the final years of British colonial rule in Kenya. At that time, building a washing station was both an economic and political statement, signalling a shift away from colonial systems of control towards greater autonomy for local growers. Kariaini became part of a growing movement that enabled smallholder farmers to process and sell their own coffee, laying the foundations for the cooperative structures that shape the region today.
