Coffee has a long history in Tanzania, it is believed that indigenous tribe members once chewed whole coffee cherries for their stimulant effects. In the centuries since, it has become a key cash crop, contributing to the country’s economy. This particular lot—a mix of Kent, Bourbon and Compact varietals—was cultivated by smallholder farmers and processed in Iyenga village. The Compact varietal, exclusive to Tanzania, was created by the Tazania Coffee Research Institute to resist the plant diseases that were plaguing the region.
