Burundi is a fascinating and unique location to source coffee from. The coffee market there is driven almost entirely by smallholder farmers owning plots that are less than a 10th of a hectare. These small lot sizes mean that Burundian microlots such as this one are almost never traceable to a single producer. Instead, they comprise of blends of the best coffees that many different producers have bought to the same washing station. Before the specialty coffee market in Burundi was born, these high-quality lots were simply lost within large-scale commercial exports.
