SL-28, a variety originally developed by Scott Laboratories in Africa during the 1920s, is rarely found in Costa Rica. Los Duran’s distinctive flavour profile captures the soft, layered fruit qualities we’d expect from a Costa Rican Gesha, but it is also marked by a vibrant, winey blackcurrant acidity—something we’d typically associate with a Kenyan coffee.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"s8\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s7\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont15\"\u003eThe Duran family farm, located in the village of Sarchí, combines tradition with innovation. Eduardo Duran has worked the land for decades, alongside his three sons—Barney, Kendall, and Arnold. While Barney is deeply involved in coffee production and processing, Kendall and Arnold bring a modern perspective to the farm, balancing their work as software engineers with their passion for coffee. Growing up, the brothers spent their school holidays immersed in the rhythms of farm life—picking cherries, tending to the trees, and learning the craft from their father. Today, their combined efforts are focused on elevating the quality of their coffee and connecting with roasters who share their values.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"s8\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s7\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont15\"\u003eThis lot of SL-28 coffee underwent semi-washed processing. Freshly harvested cherries were pulped and then fermented for 24–36 hours in the open air. After fermentation, water was added to rinse the pulped coffee. The rinsed parchment was then dried on raised beds for 7–10 days.
